W. H. G. Carter Fund
June 2003

It is gratifying  to review the assistance provided through the WHG Carter Fund since its inception in January 2001.  The Fund’s purpose is to make educational opportunities possible for under-served children and to assist in housing stability so that children may remain in the same school throughout the year.

Any church member or friend may recommend projects for assistance. The initial $3,918 Carter Fund collection on January 22, 2001, established the Fund.  The two subsequent offerings to replenish the Fund in January 2002 and 2003, and sporadic individual contributions, have yielded $9,197 for use under the guidelines established by the Board.

Projects receiving grants to date include:

bulletMatching grants for two young Woodward High School scholarship students to go on the Historic Black Colleges spring tour (2001)
bulletUnderwriting a college intern to work at the West Cincinnati Presbyterian Church Fun in Learning, Learning is Fun 8-week summer day camp program (2001, 2002 and 2003)
bulletPurchasing a series of African-American biographies for the Whittier Middle School Library, which had none, after Oyler School merged with Whittier (2001)
bulletSubsidizing 33 high school students to attend “Blues from an Alabama Sky” (2002)
bulletPartially underwriting three Hughes Center students to accompany their class to the Memphis, TN, Civil Rights Museum (2002)
bulletCovering the final two months of pre-school tuition for a young African-American being raised by his Grandmother who lost her job due to the poor economy (2003).

This year Northern Hills Unitarian Fellowship contributed an additional $500 in the name of the Carter Fund to West Cincinnati Presbyterian Church’s summer program, which allowed maintaining a small reserve in the Carter Fund for the remainder of this calendar year.

Twelve low-income families have received matching assistance to avoid immediate eviction or utility cut-off since early 2001. Each has demonstrated reasonable ability to make future payments, their arrearage due to a temporary emergency. These twelve families include 20 children and two elderly, single individuals who faced a crisis and would otherwise have been forced to move or become homeless.

The following table is a summary of Carter Fund expenditures to date and the very low cost per child or family assisted:

Contributions to the Carter Fund may be made at any time by writing a check to First Unitarian Church clearly marked for the Carter Fund.  The Carter Fund Committee, including Bev Baker, Ann Black and Dot Christenson will be joined by Fritz Casey-Leininger this summer.

The committee needs a church member who is a current social service professional as both Ann Black and Dot Christenson have retired and no longer have daily contact and updates on available non-profit and government agency programs. Anyone interested in assisting this effort to honor Rev. Carter and make a small contribution to social justice is most welcome.

Contributions to the Carter Fund may be made at any time
