New Help for New Members

You don’t have to be part of First Church for very long before you notice that volunteers are our lifeblood!

They devise the budgets, call on the sick, teach the RE classes, maintain the building, populate the choir, work for social justice, and do hundreds of other jobs that make our community thrive.  Sharing our skills and time by volunteering is a way of sharing in the ministry of the church. Most of us do at least one or two jobs every year. It’s part of our culture.

  • If you’re a new member, volunteering can be harder than it is for the rest of us. Your time for volunteering is limited (ok, that’s the same as the rest of us) and you aren’t sure what opportunities are available.

  • You also don’t know many other members and aren’t sure which ones you’d enjoy working with. You want to ease into volunteering by limiting your commitment. You’re leery of asking many questions for fear that you’ll find yourself pushed into something you don’t really want to do.

The membership committee is starting a pilot project this year to help members (especially new ones) find meaningful volunteering experiences in the church. The committee has been gathering information about jobs that need done from the staff and from church committees.

The pool of jobs they’re creating are primarily short-term (often one-shot) opportunities. They’re in a broad range of areas, and most involve working with at least one other person.

Next comes matching members to jobs that fit them. Over the coming months, a membership committee representative will talk with selected and willing new members about their skills, experience, attitudes toward service, and time availability.

Then the rep will help her or him select a job to do and provide details about time, place, and a contact person. The rep will also follow up to get an assessment of the experience after the job, and maybe help find another job.

If you already know what area of church life you’d like to contribute to, don’t hesitate to contact the chair of any committee (including membership!). Most committees are always looking for help for a variety of jobs. They’ll you get started right away. But if you’re less sure where you might fit, consider this project.

Although the membership committee will be approaching people, we’d be glad to get a call from anyone who wants to, well, . . . volunteer!
