NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Hello Everyone,

Happy New Year!  Did you make any resolutions this year?  We had several visitors Jan. 1st who have resolved to find a spiritual home.  If you have made a resolution to do the same, I encourage you to visit First Church for several weeks as we have much to offer.  Please look below for some more information.

Please be advised that my office hours have changed.  I may now be reached Sunday through Wednesday, 10am - 4pm (occasional weekdays 1pm - 9pm: based on meeting schedules).  You can contact me, Meredith Plummer, at dre@firstuu.com or 513-238-9912.

If you are a first time visitor to First Unitarian Church and are curious about our Sunday school program, make sure to look at our prospectus for information on our curriculum.  Look below for updates, and to see what your child will be doing this Sunday at First Unitarian Church.  To review what your child learned this past Sunday, take a look at the "Taking It Home," sheets below.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TOPICS OF THE WEEK

Sunday, February 5, 2011

4 year old—Kindergarten: Dreams—Today, we will talk about bedtime and explore the concept of dreams. Sophia L. Fahs identifies the realization that the world of reality sensed during wakefulness is different from the reality sensed in sleep as one of the 12 main types of experiences connected with natural religious development in young children. As part of our exploration, we will learn about and create our own dream catchers. We will also create a pillow fort using our own blankets and pillows.

1st—2nd Grade: From Lava to Life— Today we will read, From Lava to Life by Jennifer Morgan. The Universe tells the story of Earth. It’s a story about the beginning of life, and how Earth triumphs over crisis to become bacteria… jellyfish…flowers…dinosaurs! It’s a science story that is your story too, the story of your living Earth and the unbroken chain that connects you to the very first life that began to twitch in the sea four billion years ago. We will create our own volcano of life and then play a game of Lava Tag.

3rd—5th Grade: Inventions pt. 2 —Today we will finish our lesson on Alexander Graham Bell. Bell was a Unitarian and inventor who believed that all really big discoveries are the result of thought. Unitarian Universalists value curiosity and inventive spirit as well. We encourage each other to think of ways to improve things. We will tap into our own inventive spirit and create inventions of our own using the parts from last weeks “Take Apart Party.”

CHILDREN'S CHAPEL WORSHIP

Instead of religious education classes at 9am, Religious Education will be piloting a program of Children’s worship. According to Michelle Richards in Come Into the Circle: Worshiping with Children “Children are spiritual by nature. They haven’t yet lost their sense of awe, mystery, and reference for the ordinary things in life…Their innate sense of curiosity and wonder and their ability to love unconditionally and fully experience life need to be nurtured so they can develop a deep sense of their faith and beliefs.” This will be a one year trial program lead by the DRE, in collaboration with other members of the congregation. If you are interested in contributing to, assisting with or leading a children’s worship, please contact the DRE.

Honoring the Light of the Child

Inside each of us, there is something wonderful and beautiful. That “something” is our love, and it shines just like a light. When we are happy and loved, our love light shines for everyone to see. But, when we are mad, sad or afraid, our love light dims. Luckily for all of us, there are ways to make our love light bright again. Last Sunday, we practiced breathing deeply. Your child(ren) can join us for more great lessons about their love light, every Sunday at 9am, during Children’s Worship.

FAMILY CONNECTIONS

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Children in the 1st - 2nd grade class will be discussing the origins of the Universe this January.  Along with that discussion comes some discussion about our seventh principle, "We care for Earth's lifeboat."  It may seem difficult to connect with the earth in winter but there are still steps we can take to protect the web of life now.  Perhaps you should discuss some of the options below with your children and make a resolution to implement one of these eco friendly practice in your home.

— Buy eco! Super cool and environmentally friendly clothes, toys and electronics
— Recycle electronics, including computers, printers, cell phones, batteries and toys
— Buy in bulk or take a reusable bag to the grocery store
— Watch environmentally themed movies such as Sacred Planet
— Carry a reusable mug, everywhere
— Unplug electronics when they are not in use
— Use a dry erase board instead of paper
— Reuse the backside of discarded paper for scratch pads
— Recycle as much as possible
— Use energy conserving light bulbs
— Use a reusable lunch tote
— Limit your use of polystyrene (Styrofoam)
— Learn more about the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund
— Check your tire pressure
— Visit Environmentality.com
— Host your own recycled art contest
— Reduce your junk mail
— Compost
— Participate in an environmental volunteer’s event
— Use a low-flow shower head
