Religious Education Prospectus 

 

CURRICULUM FOR 2010 - 2011 CHURCH YEAR

Infants Through Toddlers

  • Staffed by Linda Swensson, a professional caregiver, and one volunteer.

  • This class gives your infant/toddler the opportunity to learn by simply allowing him/her to interact with his/her surroundings in a developmentally appropriate play setting.

Preschool

  • Staffed by Laura Sinclair, a professional caregiver, and one volunteer.

  • Celebrating Me and My World: This curriculum focuses on Character education.  It provides preschoolers with opportunities to grow in their sense of trust and caring and to devlop their self-identity and their sense of connectedness with all of life.

 

Kindergarten Through First Grade

  • Staffed by a professional teacher, and one volunteer.

  • Special Times: This curriculum acquaints our K-1st graders with the Jewish and Christian heritages out of which our Unitarian Universalist faith has grown, and engages them in celebrations of Jewish and Christian holidays and other 'special times,' such as the Shabbat/Sabbath, Thanksgiving and birthdays.

 

Second - Fifth Grade

  • Staffed by Kymm Whitehead, a professional teacher, and one volunteer.

  • Moral Tales: This curriculum focuses on character education.  It provides children with spiritual and ethical tools to make choices and take actions that reflect their Unitarian Universalist beliefs and values.

  • Toolbox of Faith: This curriculum also focuses on character education.  It invites participants to reflect on qualities of our Unitarian Universalist faith, such as integrity, courage and love, as tolls they can use in living their lives and building their own faith.
     

Jr. High (Grades 6-8)

  • Led by one volunteer teacher and an assistant.

  • The Gospel According to the Simpsons: Youth will learn about Judeo-Christian traditions through the lens of Unitarian Universalism, as they watch and discuss episodes of "The Simpsons."

 

Sr. High (Grades 9 - 12)

  • Led by our Youth Advisor.

  • Young Religious Unitarian Universalists: Sr. High students and leaders will create their curriculum as they progress through the year by utilizing the elements of worship, community building, social action, learning, and leadership.

BEYOND OUR CLASSROOM

Chalice Choir

Ages 3 through 12 are invited to join the Chalice Choir led by our Music Director, Tom Sherwood.  Chalice choir will take place each Sunday during the last 15 minutes of class.

Principle Practice

Ages 3 through 12 are invited to participate in Principle practice, if they do not wish to join Chalice Choir.  Running at the same time as Chalice Choir, principle practice provides our school aged children with the opportunity to put our seven UU principles into action, through art, action, and fun.

Special Ceremonies

To honor the rites of passage and the commitment of our volunteers, we have the following ceremonies of recognition/celebration: Teacher recognition, Kindergarten Step-Up, and Senior Student Recognition.

Intergenerational Services

At least three times throughout the year, all children and youth join their families in the sanctuary for a special service.  Infant / Toddler are is provided, and supervised games are offered.

Special Events

The RE Committee sponsors events throughout the year such as volunteer training, parent/teacher meet and greet, Easter egg hunts, and field trips.  Please check the newsletter and the RE Happenings section of this website for all of our upcoming special events.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING

Our Whole Lives

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a comprehensive sexuality education program for our 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students.  This curriculum covers topics such as anatomy, development, communication, emotions, relationships, values, self-image, and social justice.  Classes are held outside of Sunday School and in conjunction with various churches throughout the Cincinnati area.
