Odyssey Committee

Purpose

To provide lifelong learning and enrichment opportunities for adult members and friends of First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati based on the values and missions of the congregation.

Goals

1.  To generate, and make available to the congregation, an annual curriculum, appealing to a broad range of interests and experience, in a variety of educational and informational formats, including but not exclusively, classes, outings, lectures and discussion..
2.  To work closely with the Minister and other Committees to support and advance their educational efforts and needs.

Tasks

Because of the scope and diversity of the committee˘s responsibility, two working groups have been defined. The Core Group will be responsible for planning and coordinating; and the Support Group will be responsible for
facilitating and implementing.  The two are not mutually exclusive, and members may belong to either or both.

Steering Committee:

1.  Consider the educational and informational needs and interests of the congregation.
2.  Review available curricula from a variety of sources.
3.  Create a curriculum and calendar for each year from September through August, and publish an informational brochure to be disseminated to the congregation.
4.  Identify teachers, facilitators, discussions leaders and speakers to support the curriculum.
5.  Provide administrative documentation of the committee˘s work such as meeting minutes, annual budgets, educational event evaluations and annual reports.
6.  Evaluate the committee˘s goals at the end of each church year and set or re-establish goals for the coming year.
7.  Recruit support group members.


Support Group

People to help implement tasks listed above, such as:

1.  Provide and disseminate publicity: brochures, newsletter articles, leaflets, staffing Odyssey table on Sunday mornings, etc.
2.  Schedule meeting space and provide class room support: including calendaring, opening church, room set-up, teaching tools (such as newsprint, copying, etc.).
3.  Find or act as teachers, facilitators, discussion leaders; provide on-site support to outside speakers.
4.  Coordinate printed classroom materials: buy and distribute books, copy materials, etc.


Responsibilities

Steering Committee: Minimum two-year commitment. Attend monthly meetings.
Support Group: Serve as requested

Time Commitment

Steering Committee: 4-6 hours per month
Support Group: 2-4 hours per event

Skills necessary

Steering Committee: Organization, planning, administrative, strong interest in
adult education.

Support Group:
Varied, as per task accepted, interest in adult education,
