Purpose
To engage our Sr. High youth
in meaningful service in the hope that they will learn more about the
complex issues surrounding homelessness.
Background
In 2005, our Sr. High
students toured the Drop Inn Center and met with the Volunteer Coordinator
to learn more about the homeless shelter and the programs the Drop Inn
sponsors. The students were impressed with the center and wanted to
contribute. Since the task of making a meal for over 300 people was too
complex for our small group, they decided instead to supplement the meals
the Drop Inn Center makes with fresh salads. The students came early to
church, made the salads, took them to the Drop Inn Center, then stayed to
serve the meals. They have done this on a somewhat regular basis (every
6-8 weeks or so) since 2005.
Current Activity
In October Sr. High youth
met with the outreach coordinator from the Drop Inn Center to learn more
about the mission and work of the shelter. In December the Sr.
High students will make fresh salads to take as a supplement to the s the
Drop Inn Center makes and will serve the meal. They will engage in this
same activity throughout the remainder of the year, about once every 8
weeks.
