Purpose
The Unitarian Universalist Service
Committee (UUSC) is the human rights arm of our movement. UUSC works to
advance justice worldwide by combining human rights education and advocacy
in the United States with direct support for grassroots initiatives.
Background
First Unitarian has been active in UUSC
for many years.
In the summer of 2003
two First Church adults and five
youth participated in a summer work study camp
in North Carolina, where they learned about the concerns of immigrant farm
workers. Pursuant to that, they became involved with the local Farm Labor
Organizing Committee. Many First Church members supported the Mt. Olive
and the Taco Bell Boycotts until successful contracts were signed,
resulting in improved pay and working conditions for farm workers in North
Carolina and Florida.
During the Tsunami (2005) and Hurricane
Katrina (2005) our congregants gave generously to the Relief Funds set
up by UUSC and UUA. We received the Chalice Banner for our significant
giving.
Current Activities
Every Thanksgiving First Church has a
Thanksgiving supper and the proceeds are given to the UUSC. Every year our
youth AND adults participate in Guest at Your Table with
coin collection boxes. The proceeds are given to the UUSC.
