Purpose
To help members understand ballot issues
that are of direct concern to our neighborhood and that relate to our core
principles. To encourage voter registration and turnout and welcome voters
of precincts that vote in our church.
Background
Our church has a long history of supporting
social service issues that address housing, mental health, elder care
services , and public education. We do not endorse candidates. Endorsement
for Issues may be requested by any member and are voted on by the Social
Justice Committee. If there is to be a major effort to involve the
congregation, such as an Avondale neighborhood canvass for voter
registration, turn-out, or for the support of issues, SJC will seek the
approval from the Board. The Cincinnati Women's Political Caucus, which
meets monthly at First Church, provides an opportunity for current issue
involvement.
Current Activity
The Social Justice Committee endorsed and
promoted the Mental Health and Senior Services Levies in 2007. A public
meeting was held for explanation of the proposed Safety Plan. Discussion
sessions after an October church service provided an opportunity to
address questions on these levies,as well as Cincinnati Public School
levy. In 2008 a plan to canvass and register voters in S. Avondale will
be proposed to the Board of Trustees.
