PURPOSE
To provide an intergenerational project that raises funds for Interfaith
Hospitality Network while increasing our awareness about homelessness.
BACKGROUND
Every Super Bowl Sunday for many years the Interfaith Hospitality Network
conducts a national fund raiser whereby participating churches are asked
to hold out soup pots to collect change following worship services. At
First Church in 2008, we decided to do something different that would
serve to link our Religious Education Committee and our Social Justice
Committee in a joint effort as called for in our Strategic Plan.
CURRENT ACTIVITY
In 2008 our youth created soup-in-a-jar by measuring ingredients and
placing them into mason jars. They affixed cooking instructions. They also
painted ceramic bowls which were fired for free at Madison Clay Works. On
Souper Bowl Sunday they sold these items before and after the service
raising over $500 profit for Interfaith Hospitality Network. Plans are in
the works for 2009.
