UUA WASHINGTON OFFICE FOR ADVOCACY
Purpose
The mission of the Washington Office for
Advocacy is to influence public policy decisions made by the US Congress
and Administration on issues of concern to the Unitarian Universalist
Association. The Office also provides support and resources to
congregations and individuals seeking to create change in their
communities and states.
Background
It happens that from 2004 until 2008 First
Unitarians have been on staff in Washington as Legislative Assistants on
behalf of UU principles. First Megan Joiner, then Adam Gerhardstein,
graduates of First Church’s Religious Education program held this
position. Through them we became particularly aware of the good work of
this important office.
Current Activity
Through the emails we receive from UUA
Washington Office of Advocacy, we learn of important legislation, active
protests, and petition drives that need our support. The Social Justice
Committee passes this knowledge along to church members and encourages
participation.
