We are a caring Unitarian Universalist community in the centrally located Avondale neighborhood of Cincinnati. We meet in a warm and graceful building, built circa 1889, for worship services that nourish spiritual growth and learning throughout life. A self-governed congregation, we are an active force for personal and societal growth through a variety of activities that serve our members and our community.
Established in 1830, we have been an important part of the history of Cincinnati ever since. We strive to carry on the tradition of First Unitarian members throughout the years who have championed individual and civil rights, led educational and civic reform, and worked to promote justice in daily affairs. We seek to be Radically Inclusive, and are constantly looking for ways to extend our welcome to all people.

"The Wisdom of the Dhammapada"--Dr. Alexander Riegel Despite the Buddha’s insistence not to wax philosophical, Buddhism became one of the most philosophical religions in the world. The Dhammapada is the exception to this rule. ("The Dhammapada," is said to the the Buddha's teaching for the lay person.) It is a relatively accessible text – though it still requires some thoughtfulness and self-awareness. Join us as we explore its simple teachings that reveal great wisdom. January 25 "Gifts for the Community"--Committee on Right Relations One of the most important things to First U Congregants is our loving community. We feel good when we're together, and we both validate and bring out the best in one another. What gifts do you bring to this community? How do you feel when you're being recognized for your gifts? This will be an intergenerational service where we will share our thinking about our gifts, and how this binds us together. February 1 "Doubt"--Dr. Alexander Riegel In the mid to late 19th century, both the scientific method (Darwin, et. al.) and Biblical criticism (esp. German) were becoming dominant rational forces. These forces heaped suspicion upon our understanding of religion, especially the orthodox interpretation of the Bible. Unitarians were especially given to such suspicion and began to approach religion and the Bible with increasing doubt. Today, doubt pervades our UU religion. Dr. Riegel will be considering all of this while exploring the place of doubt in the religious life. Events and ActivitiesCheck out the current adult education schedule HERE.
