Adult Education at First Unitarian Church

Picture
Adult Education at First Unitarian Church is broadly based, including spirituality (the study of sacred texts and spiritual practices), Unitarian Universalism and its adherents (e.g., Ralph Waldo Emerson and Louisa May Alcott), philosophy (from Greek thought to the existentialists), as well book studies and discussion groups about current affairs and other matters.
Our adult education offerings primarily occur during one six-week semester in autumn and one six-week semester in spring, sometimes in person and sometimes via Zoom. Offerings typically occur in the evenings during the week. However some, like a one-day spiritual study and practice retreat may occur on a Saturday, or a forum may occur following church on Sunday.

Our offerings are open to the public. If you would like to attend one of them, please register. It helps us plan accordingly. A registration link for each offering is provided in the description.

Ongoing Offerings

Guided Meditation Group
Every Monday, 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. on Zoom, using readings of Pema Chodron. Contact [email protected].

Our Remaining Autumn 2025 Offerings

Picture
Sanskrit Mantra and Meditation [REGISTRATION CLOSED]
1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month, beginning Sept. 18
(NOTE: there will be no classes in January.)
7:00–8:30 p.m. in person, Room 207
Led by Dr. Alexander Riegel, Developmental Minister

This course will introduce you to the Sanskrit alphabet, which will be the building blocks of our mantra practice. Once we master the alphabet, participants will also learn several simple mantras and a few more complex mantras. These mantras will be used to create sacred space and time for our group practice of silent meditation. The course will run until our interest wanes or the third Wednesday in May, whichever comes first.

NOTE: This course is open to the public so feel free to invite anyone you think may be interested. I hope those with interest will be able to join me and remember, there's no place like "Om"!

Enneagram/Action Science: Deep Dive [REGISTRATION CLOSED]
2nd Thursday of the month, Sept. through June

(NOTE: there will be no classes in January.)
7:00–9:00 p.m. on Zoom
Led by Dr. Alexander Riegel, Developmental Minister

Having already offered basic introductions to the enneagram and Action Science, this year I am offering a deeper dive into both these skill sets—taught together. My hope is to have a group of four to six people who, at the end of the church year, can serve as resources for resolving interpersonal challenges, as well as teach others these same skill sets, so they are not lost when I leave First Church. However, you do not have to commit to being one of those four to six people in order to participate in this offering. It would be best, however, if you have already taken both of these introductory courses--though that is not required.

Build Your Own Theology
January–May, 2026  (Every other Saturday. Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7 and 21, April 4 and 18, May 2)
10:00 a.m. in person

Note: The first session will last two hours. All other sessions will last an hour.
Led by Nancy Sawyer

We (UU's) seem to be predominantly a religion of "come-outers," people who have left some other faith and are now "come-inners," people who have chosen to cast their lot with Unitarian Universalism. We tell our members to "find their own truths," but do not give them any tools to do that. This course provides some tools for building a theology based on the materials of individual life experiences.
